Business Owners Rebel As Obama and Biden Visit

The four words the President uttered during a visit to Roanoke are still resonating with small business owners: “You Didn’t Build That”. Two business owners have made their opinions about that statement known in the face of visits from President Obama and Vice-President Biden. First, an Iowa caterer who donned a special t-shirt to feed the White House Press Corps:

“Government didn’t build my business, I DID.”

That was the pro-Mitt Romney message on the T-shirt Davenport, Iowa, deli co-owner Ross Murty wore when he went to work on Wednesday. Nothing unusual, especially in a campaign season—except he was serving food to the traveling White House press corps during President Barack Obama’s visit to the town.

His business partner, a Democrat, is the one who actually arranged the event with the Obama campaign. Here in Virginia, another business owner decided to turn down the business altogether, choosing not to accept a visit from Vice President Joe Biden. He’s now getting press for saying no:

“This is an opportunity of a lifetime but essentially I said ‘No offense to you or the campaign but I just decline you guys coming in here. At that time she said ‘Are you sure? There’s going to be a lot of press, a lot of activity,’” McMurray said.

Why in the world would a new business owner say “no” to a photo op with the Vice President of the United States?

McMurray said it was President Obama’s recent remarks about small business and who built what.

“Very simply, ‘you didn’t build that’” McMurray said. “Speaking of small businesses and entrepreneurs all across this country and actually last night my wife was up all night. No sleep, she’s worked a full 24 hours.”

Will it hurt McMurray’s business? He’s a bit worried about that, but I imagine there will be somewhat of a “Chick-fil-A effect” if conservatives catch wind of his denial. I know that my girlfriend and I plan to make at least one purchase at ”Crumb and Get It”, his bakery, over the next week as a thank you. Apparently, some others appreciated it as well:

Here’s the back story, we’re told that shortly after Crumb and Get It told Biden’s advance people ‘no’ — the secret service walked in and told Chris McMurray ”Thanks for standing up and saying ‘no’ — then they bought a whole bunch of cookies and cupcakes.
